Over 600K People Tuned In To Watch Crowded House At The Sydney Opera House Last Night

It’s easy to get caught up in the plunging rapids that 2016 has proven to be so far, but with a mere number of days left, it’s become clear that there are some people who still crave substance and meaning, with more than 600,000 of them tuning in to catch Crowded House perform from the Sydney Opera House forecourt last night.

For four very special nights, the band took to the iconic locale to perform a run of ‘Encore’ shows which marked 20 years since they performed their official farewell gig at the exact same spot.

As Australian Associated Press reports, around 5,000 people crammed themselves into the space each night, with a mind boggling 643,000 all tuning in from home thanks to the ABC for the final show last night, according to OzTAM‘s latest TV viewing figures.

That’s more than half a million people looking away from Facebook, closing Instagram, at least pausing their PlayStations and plugging into a culturally important moment — Fuck yeah, team!

And while technically it may be a bit of a kick in the guts for anyone who pulled hair out over the highly coveted tickets, or for anyone who forked out considerably inflated amounts of money for tickets, hopefully they too will find solace in the face that Australians crave substance and meaning.

It’s been a big few days for Crowded House, who were also inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame last week. Frontman Neil Finn also used some of the ‘Encore’ shows to call out the residents of the famous ‘Toaster’ building, who have become accustom to complaining about noise made from performances in the forecourt.

“To all the nice people in the Toaster, when they bought their $7 million apartment they thought ‘God there’s going to be some nice music to listen to’, let’s hear it for them.” Finn told the crowd last night.
