When it rains it pours, and just a few weeks after announcing he would be rejoining Midnight Oil for a run of 2017 national tour dates, Peter Garrett has announced plans to release his debut solo album, the ominously titled A Vision Of Now.
The news comes with the first officially single from the album, Tall Trees. I’ll admit, this writer was at first pensive pressing play on the jam but rest assured, Garrett still got it. “I’m back!” he shouts across the song which appears to be just as politically/socio-economically charged as his offerings in Midnight Oil.
“Like Muhammad Ali’s punching bag or Rupert Murdoch’s latest swag…” he coos at one stage.
The album drops on Friday, July 15th and was the end result of Garrett’s efforts to pen his memoir. As the former-Polly explained, words and melodies just came out of nowhere:
“As I was finishing my memoir, melodies and lines kept dropping into my head and, big surprise, I ended up writing a few songs. Once these tunes were out in the sunlight I decided I might as well jump into a studio and record what I had along with a few other bits and pieces I’d always liked.”
Though rife with metaphor, the over arching message of Tall Trees seems to be Garrett is back – to once again bust skulls and take names via song.
