Phoebe Bridgers’ second album, Punisher, is nearly two years old, but she’s still getting plenty of mileage out of it. The Californian songwriter will kick off a mega tour of the USA, Canada, Europe and the UK next month, including stops at Coachella and Glastonbury.
Phoebe Bridgers has shared a new version of the album cut, ‘Chinese Satellite’, recorded live at famed Los Angeles recording complex, Sound City. In an interview on The Adam Buxton Podcast, Bridgers described ‘Chinese Satellite’ as a song about “not believing in God, but kind of wishing I did.”
She went on, “Even when I talk to my friends who grew up in crazy Christian cults or something, they talk about the community and a bunch of kids just wanting to do good—and then, of course, teenage trauma from rejecting that.”
Bridgers said she envies people with fringe beliefs, too. “Even conspiracy theories or aliens or QAnon even – can you imagine thinking there’s somebody out there who’s smarter than you and has, like, a big plan? Because I don’t believe that.”
Bridgers’ new release is part of Secretly Canadian’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Bridgers is signed to Dead Oceans, which is part of the Secretly Group along with Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar. All three labels are headquartered in Bloomington, Indiana.
Proceeds from Bridgers’ single will help the Secretly Group raise $USD250,000 to support people experiencing homelessness in Bloomington. Listen to ‘Chinese Satellite’ below.
