As Beyoncé makes her way through her hometown leg of the current Formation North American tour, a group of police officers have found themselves with nothing better to do on a Saturday night than protest the pop star.
As Idolator reports, the group stood more than 1.5km from the Houston, Texas venue, shining a blue light towards the stadium.
Members of the Coalition of Police and Sheriffs or C.O.P.S for short (cringe) donned t-shirts which read “Police Lives Matter”, and appeared to hold posters depicting Chris Evans’ Captain America (double cringe).
Speaking on behalf of the group, C.O.P.S member Tony Ragsdale explained their position: “Some of her performances we believe to be anti-police.”
All the commotion stems from Beyoncé’s Super Bowl 50 halftime performance, which included dancers dresses as Black Panthers and the video for her single Formation.
Houston Police Officers Union decided not to partake in the protest. Union vice president Doug Griffith explained their reasoning to ABC-13, “From the initial release of the video, I think it’s been blown out of proportion. I think at the end of the day most people understand [Beyoncé] has no problem with law enforcement.”
The sentiment of C.O.P.S echoes that of the Miami Police union who threatened to boycott Beyonce’s Miami performance. Of course, the event went ahead fully staffed with no boycott to be seen. That is, other than the official tour merch witch boasted t-shirts reading “Boycott Beyonce” effectively taking all the wind out of the sails of her detractors.
Bey cleared things up in an interview with Elle, explaining: “I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of the officers who sacrifice themselves to keeps us safe. But let’s be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things.”
