Police Plan Massive Drug Crackdown On Stereosonic Melbourne

If you’re going to Stereosonic in Melbourne today – expect to be greeted by cops and sniffer dogs on arrival.

News Limited reports a Passive Alert Detection Dog operation will be conducted at the event today, targeting anyone who is believed to be carrying illicit drugs.

Up to 50,000 punters are expected to converge on the Melbourne Showgrounds for the sold-out leg of the dance festival, headlined by Avicii, Calvin Harris and Tiesto.

Around 90 people were arrested at the Melbourne leg of Stereosonic last year over drug-related offences – and significant quantities of drugs such as ice, ecstasy, cocaine and cannabis were all seized.

Victoria Police Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Pilkington told AAP that Police will be ruthless with anyone found caught carrying illegal substances.

“There are always some patrons of music festivals who think that taking drugs will enhance their day,” Sen-Sgt Pilkington said.

“Unfortunately all too often we see the aftermath of the harm that drugs can cause.

“We’re encouraging all festival goers to enjoy the day of music safely, and without the use of illicit drugs.”

Local police will also set up patrols outside the Melbourne Showgrounds as part of a post-event operation.
