Adrian Utley of critically adored Bristol experimental trio Portishead has revealed that that the group’s members are “clearing our schedules” in order to record a fourth album. The band’s last release was 2008’s Third, which came eleven years after the group’s self-titled sophomore LP.
“We’re clearing our schedules so we can get on with it, otherwise it will be another ten years,” said Utley during a Q&A session for The Quietus at By:Larm Festival in Oslo. Utley added that he has already discussed plans to record a follow-up to Third with bandmate Geoff Barrow, saying, “we were both really enthusiastic, and enthusiasm counts for a lot in Portishead world.”
The group will headline ATP Iceland 2014 and were recently added to the lineup of Lowlands festival. During the session Utley said that the band’s 2014 tour dates will affect the production of the record, but remarked with enthusiasm on the band being free of any recording label contracts.
According to The Quietus, Utley said the band feel fortunate to have built their careers before the global dip in album sales, as it has given them time to work on side-projects and each build their own home studios. He said the band will likely license the completed fourth album themselves.
