Alaskan-bred, Portland-based indie legends Portugal. The Man have said they’re working on a follow up to their seventh studio album, Evil Friends and they’ve recruited the help of Beastie Boys founding member Mike D during the recording process.
“We got some new stuff – super young… We’ve been working with Mike D out in L.A., quite a bit actually,” bassist Zach Carouthers told triple j this week. “It’s been amazing… John [Gourley-frontman] and I pretty much became friends over the Beastie Boys and so this is a huge deal for us and it’s been so much fun working with him. He’s hilarious.”
“We’re always recording music, even when we’re here we’ve got studio time booked out when we’re in Sydney,” they told triple j’s The Doctor. “We’re gonna keep working on the new album and some other projects we have going on.” The band say there’s no current release date for the new record. “I have no idea where we’re at,” said Carouthers. “We’ve got a lot of songs, they’re just not done.”
The Beastie Boys won’t be making any more music of their own, revealing earlier this year that they promised the late Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch, who died in 2012 after a battle with cancer, that they wouldn’t make any more music after he passed away, nor agree to license any of their past music for promotional use.
Portugal. The Man’s last studio album was produced by the prolific Danger Mouse. It produced the cracking singles Evil Friends, Purple Yellow Red and Blue and Modern Jesus.
