Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer and Will Ferrel look-a-like Chad Smith has received death threats in Brazil following a drum clinic gone wrong.
TMZ is reporting that during the clinic, Smith was given a soccer jersey belonging to the Flamengo soccer club, one of the most popular teams in South America. Smith then proceeded to stuff the jersey in the back of his pants and figuratively ‘wipe his ass’ with it.
Footage of the incident has now emerged (which you can watch below), which shows sections of the crowd egging Smith on in their dislike for the soccer club, and others booing him in support of the club. Something is seen narrowly missing Smith as it’s thrown across the room, most likely a shoe. Now that this footage has surfaced, Smith’s actions are displeasing more and more fans as his band continues to tour South America.
Death threats and threats of physical violence against Smith can be found in the YouTube video comments. While it would be easy to play these comments off, in a part of the world where soccer is virtually a religion, that might be risky. Smith has now apologised for his actions via Twitter, saying, “I want to apologize for my inappropriate antics at the drum clinic, my joke about team rivalries went too far.”
Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis has also been in strife recently after being confused for a Rolling Stones fan and getting in a fight with security.
