Rich Brian surprise released the new EP, Brightside, on Friday, 21st January. The four-song collection includes the single, ‘New Tooth’.
Brightside is the Indonesian rapper’s second consecutive EP, following 2020’s 1999, the title of which referred to Brian’s year of birth. To coincide with the release of Brightside, Brian has dropped a video for the track ‘Getcho Mans’, a collaboration with fellow Indonesian rapper Warren Hue.
“[Brightside] started from me making ‘New Tooth’ and realising how much I missed rapping,” Brian said in a statement. “While doing melodies are fun, I wanted to remind people that I still love to rap. It’s short, it’s not an album, but I see it like a mental note of how the past year has accelerated my growing-up process as an artist and a person.”
Rich Brian and Warren Hue are both signed to the US label, 88rising, which works with Asian American artists and artists from Asian countries who’re releasing music in the USA. Both artists made multiple appearances on the label’s soundtrack for the 2021 film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Rich Brian is still yet to follow up his 2019 album, The Sailor, which included the streaming hits ‘100 Degrees’ and ‘Drive Safe’. But, in addition to the two EPs, Brian’s kept the singles coming over the past few years. ‘Edamame’, a collaboration with Canadian rapper bbno$, placed at #24 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2021.
