Run The Jewels have announced an all-star roster of production talent for their upcoming Meow The Jewels project. The hip-hop duo’s Kickstarter-funded “pet project” will feature contributions from Just Blaze, SKYWLKR, Zola Jesus, Baauer, Prince Paul, The Alchemist, Boots, and Dan the Automator.
According to El-P, one half of Run The Jewels, he will also helm one of the reworks set to grace the feline-inspired remix album. Issuing a post on his official Instagram channel, the list of production credits also includes Geoff Barrow, Nick Hook, and Solidified Sun, each rendered as playable video game characters.
For those playing catch-up, Meow The Jewels began as a joke during the lead-up to the release of Run The Jewels’ sophomore LP. Upon announcement of the new album, El-P and Killer Mike included a range of ridiculous pre-order packages, including a $40,000 Meow The Jewels package. One lucky fan would receive an album featuring a remixed version of Run The Jewels 2 made entirely out of cat noises.
However, what started as a joke took on a new life after a die-hard fan launched a Kickstarter to fund Meow The Jewels. At the time of writing, the campaign has managed to raise $26,250 of its $45,100 goal from 1,119 backers and it’s been picking up steam since it was acknowledged by the duo themselves.
The artists set to provide the feline soundbeds have been showing their support too. The Alchemist, Zola Jesus, SKYWLKR, and Just Blaze have all promoted the campaign via Twitter, with Just Blaze offering to release a kit of all the drums he used “from 2001-2005” if the campaign is successful.
According to El-P, if the Meow The Jewels campaign is successfully funded, he will donate all of the proceeds to charity. Meanwhile, according to a recent tweet from SKYWLKR, “part of the money” raised will be donated to help the families of the late Eric Garner and Mike Brown, slain by police this year.
