If Australian voters had their way, Russia would be in with a damn good chance of winning this year’s Eurovision song contest.
The country’s entrant – a fuzzy group of grandmas named Buranovskiye Babushki – were the clear winners of SBS’s first Eurovision favourite artist poll last night, based on acts that performed in the first semi-final.
According to their profile page on the SBS Eurovision site, Buranovskiye Babushki are “a folk group from the village of Buranovo in the Malopurginsky area of the Udmurt Republic, Russian Federation. The eldest member of the group is 76 years old.”
Their song – Party for Everybody – is filled with plenty of trademark Eurovision cheese – and contains the catchy lyrics of “party for everybody dance, come on and dance, come on and dance, come on and BOOM! BOOM!”
Social media lit up in support of the Russian act when their performance was broadcast last night – with several quoting on the SBS Eurovision Facebook page how much they loved the Grandmas and the oven, which they brought on stage as part of their performance. Fan Brendan Dennis even went as far to say: “That was the best thing I’ve ever seen”.
