Actor Sacha Baron Cohen said in an interview on Conan that the inimitable Liam Gallagher, of Oasis, once threatened to ‘stab him in the eye.’
Cohen said he angered the Gallagher brother by leaving out a joke about the musician from an acceptance speech at GQ’s Men of the Year Awards in 2012, after which Gallagher made the comment.
“He’s (Liam Gallagher) sitting next to Bono on a couch and I go and sit next to Bono,” explains Cohen. “Liam Gallagher goes, ‘Why the fuck didn’t you take the piss out of me tonight?’ And then he goes, ‘You know what? I’m going to stab you … I’m going to stab you in the eye!’
“I’ve never heard such a specific threat,” Cohen said of the incident. Eventually he didn’t stab me but I thought to avoid confrontation by having my hair done like him in my next movie”.
Cohen’s caricatures – among them Ali G, Borat and Bruno – have attracted praise and criticism in the past. Cohen’s new film Grimsby follows the escapades of Nobby, a British football fan come spy from a small fishing town. Nobby happens, as it turns out, to have a striking resemblance to Liam Gallagher. A worthy tribute, perhaps.
Grimsby, will be released in Australia on March 10th. Watch Sacha Baren Cohen describe his encounter with Gallagher, below.
