Following the 2004 release of their internationally acclaimed debut album The Lost Dub Tapes – a record regarded as a milestone in Australian dub music – Secret Masters are pleased to announce they will launch their much anticipated sophomore album Words, Power, Sound in their hometown of Melbourne during November.
Secret Masters will launch Words, Power, Sound on Saturday 28 November at Bar Open in Melbourne, and will be joined on stage by album collaborator and Australia’s own queen of soul Kylie Auldist.
Born out of a mutual admiration for dub and reggae music, Secret Masters are musicians Pieter Bourke and Donnie Dub (aka Brian Westbrook). Together they present a futuristic vision of dub combining the digital precision of ragga, modern roots and classic dancehall.
Released on 6 November via The Planet Company, Words, Power, Sound was recorded in Melbourne and Jamaica and features a global array of vocalists. The lyrics to title track Words, Power, Sound were penned by Jamaican toaster Kulcha Knox, the son of well-known Jamaican DJ Jeff Dixon (JBC Radio) who was killed in 1987 alongside reggae musician Peter Tosh (The Wailers). The track is a powerful homage to the Niyabinghi movement of Jamaica.
British reggae artist Tippa Irie appears on the dancehall riddim ‘What If?’ and the dubwise ‘Black Culture’. Both the album and single feature internationally acclaimed producer Mad Professor (UK) providing unique dub remixes of ‘Black Culture’. Rising Jamaican MC Mad Doggy Dog wrote the anthemic ‘More Weed’ on the spot in a record store. Shanti Reblah sings the innocent ‘Rastaman Chant’, the UK’s Natty Wailer (UK) sings an ode to Rasta living on ‘Country Life’, while Australian vocalists Kylie Auldist (The Bamboos) and Banny Wallace also make contributions to the album.
Words, Power, Sound is testament to the fact that Secret Masters are at the forefront of contemporary dub and reggae. The album will initially be released on Friday 6 November via The Planet Company as a limited edition double CD containing vocal and instrumental versions.
