It’s going to take more than illness to hold back Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings and their forthcoming album Give The People What They Want. Following a brief setback after frontwoman Sharon Jones was diagnosed with cancer, the band is back, locking in a release date for their new album and unveiling the lead track Retreat!
Initially, the album was slated for an August 2013 release, though plans were put on hold so Jones could focus on getting better. Following a successful operation, continuous treatment and a whole lotta positive vibes, things are once again pushing forward for the band, who have confirmed the new release date of Friday, 10th January.
Given the band’s ability to handcraft memories and experiences, rather than just songs, Retreat! seems an appropriate introduction to the album. The foreboding, thunderous instrumentals sustain an upbeat tempo, keeping the energy high for the subsequent tracks.
