Nominations for the 2015 Grammy Awards were announced overnight with Australian born artists tuned international stars Sia and Iggy Azalea amongst the most recognised artitst, scoring four nominations each, behind UK soul crooner Sam Smith and Queen Bey, Beyoncé, who are each up for six awards.
Sia’s 2014 hit Chandelier, Azalea feat. Charli XCX’s Fancy and Smith’s Stay With Me are all up for Record Of The Year, alongside Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off and Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass.
Chandelier is also nominated for Song of the Year and Best Music Video while the reclusive songstress herself is up for Best Pop Vocal Performance. Azalea’s Fancy has also landed in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, her 2014 release The New Classic is up for Best Rap Album and the Mullumbimby-born rapper will also go up against Bastille, Brandy Clark, HAIM and Sam Smith for the title of Best New Artist.
The nominees for Album Of The Year were announced at the televised “A Very Grammy Christmas” special in the US. Albums up for the prestigious award include Beyoncé’s self-titled release, Pharrell Williams’s GIRL, Ed Sheeran’s X, Beck’s Morning Phase and Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour.
In other notable news, thanks to her surprise 2014 self-titled visual album, Beyoncé became the most nominated female and the seventh most nominated artist in Grammy history after picking up six nods, also including Best R&B Song for Drunk in Love (featuring Jay Z) and Best Urban Contemporary Album for her self-titled record.
Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which featured contributions from Australia’s M-Phazes, will battle it out against Azalea as well as ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron, Childish Gambino’s Because the Internet and Common’s Nobody’s Smiling for Rap Album Of The Year.
The category for Best Electronic Album features acclaimed 2014 releases such as Aphex Twin’s Syro, Röyksopp & Robyn’s Do It Again, and Little Dragon’s Nabuma Rubberband, while the Best Alternative Album category features Arcade Fire’s Reflektor, St. Vincent’s self-titled third album, Jack White’s Lazaretto, Alt J’s This is All Yours, and Cage the Elephant’s Melophobia.
