Fulfilling the dreams of many a young reality TV show reject everywhere, 30-year-old viola player Natalie Holt went rogue while her classical group backed opera singers Richard and Adam on the Britain’s Got Talent final, pelting baddy judge Simon Cowell with eggs.
Holt is part of Raven Quartet, who have been providing backing for the “talent” on the reality TV juggernaut since 2012, and told The Telegraph her actions were a protest. “I basically took a stand against people miming on television and against Simon and his dreadful influence on the music industry.”
In a blog post that’s now been deleted, Holt said Raven Quartet initially took the gig to get more exposure but didn’t necessarily agree with the show’s values:
“We could get a load more gigs if we played to 15 million viewers, even if those viewers were of the opinion that a dog with a hula hoop constituted entertainment gold. We were uncomfortable that we were, by entering, complicit with the exploitation of the vulnerable to be humiliated in front of millions. But we had made ourselves publicity whores, we’d made our bed, we had to play.”
But today Holt seems to have a bit of egg on her face, saying, “I want to apologise to Richard and Adam for overshadowing their performance. I’ve never done anything like this before and in hindsight I have realised it was a silly thing to do.” While some of her bandmates have stuck by her, others have denounced her actions and Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden has labelled her a “stupid cow”. Cowell, however, has handled the incident in style, taking to his Twitter account to make comments like “I really don’t like eggs”.
