Sinéad O’Connor Confirms She Is Not Quitting Music After Prematurely Announcing Retirement

Sinead O’Connor has triggered mass confusion after announcing her retirement from the music industry, before immediately retracting it.

The Irish singer broke the news of her retirement on social media in a series of now-deleted tweets, revealing plans to release one final album, dubbed No Veteran Dies Alone, next year, before hanging up her microphone for good.

“I’ve gotten older and I’m tired. So it’s time for me to hang up my nipple tassels, having truly given my all,” the 54-year-old tweeted (via News Corp).

NVDA in 2022 will be my last release. And there’ll be no more touring or promo,” she continued.

“It’s not sad news. It’s staggeringly beautiful news. A wise warrior knows when he or she should retreat: #MeTime. It’s been a forty year journey. Time to put the feet up and make other dreams come true ;)”

She continued: “Apologies if any upset caused to booking agents or promoters or managers due to my tweeting about my retirement… All shows which were originally set for 2020, rescheduled to 2021 and then to 2022 are going to be pulled. Because this soldier woman has grown old quicker than Covid.”

However, O’Connor has since deleted those tweets.

The singer, who has been open about her struggles bipolar disorder with clinical depression, has now published a lengthy statement, explaining that her treatment in several recent interviews had triggered her to jump the gun and announce her retirement prematurely.

“Good news. Fuck retiring. I retract. Am not retiring. I was temporarily allowing pigs in lipstick to fuck my head up,” she tweeted.

“I said I was retiring. As I’ve said many times before in knee jerk reactions when I was young and made the butt of media abuse on the grounds I’m legally vulnerable.”

She continued: “The hugest misconception of ‘Sinéad O’Connor’ is that she is Amazonian. I’m not. I’m a five foot four inch soft hearted female who is actually very vulnerable.

“When people ridicule or invalidate or disrespect or abuse or misuse me… I turn back into the hurt child. Or that appallingly treated young woman, and my job becomes something I’m terrified of.

“But I love my job. Making music that is… I am born for live performance.”

The ‘Nothing Compares 2 ‘ singer added: “I feel safe in retracting my expressed wish to retire and I will in fact be doing all shows currently booked for 2022.

“Also, I lied when I said I was past my peak. Ain’t no such fuckin’ thing.”
