Skegss Return With ‘Spaceman’ And 2024 Regional Tour

Skegss have shared a new single entitled ‘Spaceman’, which formally marks their first new music in over two years. It also serves as their first single as a duo, following the formal departure of bassist Toby Cregan from the band in mid-2023 after a final show at that year’s Splendour In The Grass. To support the release of the track, the band have announced an extensive regional tour across June and July 2024. A full list of those dates, as well as ticketing information, can be found below.

In a press statement, lead vocalist and guitarist Benny Reed noted that the band had originally begun work on the song during lockdown, following the completion of their second studio album Rehearsal. He noted the song went through “a couple of versions” before he and drummer Jonny Lani landed on the one that has been officially released.

“[I’m] happy we kept trying new things with this one and where we got it to,” said Reed. “It’s funny how far we are from outer space; sleeping is hard sometimes, but thinking about outer space is harder.” An accompanying music video was also shared for the single, which can be viewed below.

Skegss – ‘Spaceman’

The music video was directed by the band’s friend Vaughan Deadly, and sees Reed have a close encounter with an alien known as Ricky Cheesemoon. “He looked a similar age to us in light years, so we thought we would show him what we do for fun to cheer him up,” joked Reed about the music video. “He found a groove, he accidently fell in love and he lost his way twice.”

The duo’s So Far From Spaceman tour begins in Torquay on Victoria’s surf coast in mid-June and wraps in Ulladulla at the end of July. They will be joined by Carla Geneve for all dates except the Victorian leg, for which they will be joined by garage rock band Good Sniff.

Since the release of Rehearsal in 2021, Skegss have released ‘Bunny Man’ – a tribute to their longtime roadie David Herington – as well as ‘Stranger Days’, which featured the B-side ‘December’. They played several shows towards the end of 2023, including appearances at Clearly Festival and Let The Good Times Roll as well as two headlining shows at Newcastle’s King Street Bandroom.
