In his very own Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, Skrillex – real name Sonny John Moore – has railed against what he perceives as a “jock elitist mentality” within the dubstep community, indicating that he feels the fun has been taken out of dance music.
Answering questions about the current climate in dubstep-based genres, and the electronic music scene in general, the DJ posted a seemingly unprompted tirade that reads like a Jerry Maguire-esque mission statement.
“At the end of the day it’s DANCE music.. dancing is supposed to be fun. Dance music should be fun to… I don’t think it’s meant to be taken so seriously… it’s not politics,” he wrote. “I think success has to come with being open about your personality, doing YOU and not giving a FUCK what people have to say. Those are the people who catch my attention at least.”
Skrillex then went on to blast the mentality of some of the communities that have built up around his music, groups he feels he has no connection with”
“I come form hardcore and punkrock.. I came from the uncool lunch tables. I feel like there’s this jock elitist mentality when it comes to dubstep in particular which is so against everything I stand for. BEING yourself, and not giving a fuck what others think. Not judging others.. For fuck sakes it’s just MUSIC. stop taking it so seriously and have fun.. And if you dont like something, then just fkn forget about it! :)”
When asked about the many variants of dubstep-based music (such as American dubstep, Brostep and UK dubstep) Skrillex responded with: “I think everything is blending together really.. The thing is, there’s really no reason why both [US and UK] styles can’t coexist… it helps bring attention to all genres.”
Skrillex also revealed during his AMA session that one of his favourite classical instruments is the harp (“harpstep confirmed” declared one quick-witted fan), that he would “love to work on some Sci Fi movies and go into fullllll on geek sound design mode”, was heavily influenced by Daft Punk, Justice and Aphex Twin, has been slowly sending material back-and-forth with Icelandic musician Bjork over the last few years, and that he believes Norwegian and Swedish crowds to have “the hottest girls”.
Skrillex is slated to play at Governors Ball and Coachella this year. He was also recently hit with a lawsuit after a stage dive allegedly caused a crowd member to have stroke.
