Californian band and Bluesfest 2017 act Slightly Stoopid have given ‘stoner music’ a whole new meaning, by creating a smokable (and very expensive) vinyl record out of hash.
As Billboard reports, the band’s manager Jon Philips came up with the concept for the hash record, and says the idea came from a desire to create a special release of the band’s stoner track ‘Dabbington’ (below), while also bringing awareness to cannabis legalisation.
The first two prototypes of the record cost a cool USD$7,000 to make, including USD$6,000 for the ‘bubble hash’ used and USD$1,000 to stamp and master the record at a Los Angeles studio. The first prototype supposedly had a decent sound, but some local potheads apparently got their hands on it. The second prototype reportedly produced some pretty “questionable audio”, but a third and final pressing is in the pipeline for later this year.
Philips says the final pressing of the record might be auctioned off for charity, given that it’s not like any other record out there. “It’s not something you’re going to plop on your turntable over and over again,” he says. “For now, this is an art piece.”
Slightly Stoopid will perform in Australia in April as part of Byron Bay Bluesfest. Earlier this week they also announced two Bluesfest 2017 sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne.
