Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison shocked maggots everywhere yesterday when he announced that he is leaving the band for “personal reasons”. The group’s frontman Corey Taylor has given his first interview following Jordison’s announcement, talking with Minneapolis radio station 93X in an interview you can stream in full down below.
It’s still unclear whether or not Jordison quit the band, was kicked out, or if the split was mutual. Taylor has remained tight-lipped in this new interview, saying that he “legally and respectfully” can’t tell fans much more about what has happened. At least not at this stage.
“I can confirm that we have parted ways with Joey and as soon as we can say something, we will, but we’re trying to protect him, trying to protect us, just making sure that we do everything right because that’s what we would expect from ourselves and what we would expect from the fans. I know the fans are chomping at the bit, it’s just we can’t really say anything right now,” he says.
Taylor goes on to discuss the future of Slipknot, admitting that the band are working on new material which is “sounding really really good”. Reflecting on this, Taylor says, “I know in light of yesterday’s news, I know it’s weird, but if anything positive can come out of this, it’s just that I hope the fans know that we’re really working towards putting out an album next year.” According to Taylor, Jordison will not be appearing on that album, and he was not taking part in Slipknot’s songwriting sessions prior to his departure from the band.
Slipknot’s last release was 2008′s All Hope Is Gone. Since then the band’s bassist Paul Gray was found dead in a Des Moines hotel room in 2010, and band member Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan has said that the band aren’t emotionally prepared to write a new record. From what Taylor has said though, their is indeed new material on the way. Yet fans still wait with bated breath for more details on the details of Jordison’s departure.
