Slipknot Reckon They Have “Seven Or Eight” New Songs Written For The Next Album

It looks like Slipknot‘s next album is starting to take shape if we’re to believe Shawn “The Clown” Crahan.

He spoke about the follow-up to 2014’s .5: The Gray Chapter with Metal Hammer while also recounting how they overcame the struggle of losing bassist Paul Gray, who died in 2010, and drummer Joey Jordison, who was dismissed before the last album.

The Gray Chapter was pretty much the final learning velocity of our career,” he said.

“We had to replace a bass player, we had to replace a drummer — one of them was walking the earth, the other was buried in the earth. It was a very hard time. People were telling us, ‘How is the band gonna write? Joey and Paul are gone.’ Fuck you. We made a fucking awesome album that we love. And we’re gonna continue to do that. I actually have a date that some of us are gonna get together in a studio and get things going for the next one.”

Craham said he went to Los Angeles with guitarist Jim Root and drummer Jay Weinberg earlier this year to “organize everything we had written out on the road.”

They spent two weeks “organizing all that” and now he reckons they have, “twenty-seven ideas ready to go — seven or eight of them are full songs.”

“These songs can change, they can be written over, nothing is in stone. But it’s great that we have concrete ideas to begin with. So the future has never been sweeter for Slipknot music.”

It sounds like they’re still yet to go through these ideas with frontman Corey Taylor but he said, “we’re just writing music and getting ideas and moods and soundscapes.”

Taylor has been busy with his other band Stone Sour for much of the past year. They released their sixth album Hydrograd this year and have also been touring off the back of it.

The last time Crahan discussed the next Slipknot record, he said that it could be a “double album” or a “concept album”.

We’re just going to have to wait and see what happens when Taylor joins the writing process.
