Some 16 years after their last long-player, Soundgarden are now tantalising fans with the prospect of new material. A message on the grunge pioneers’ website suggests a new record might be forthcoming in 2011.
A post at soundgardenworld.com dated February 15 stated, “Over the past few months, we’ve been busy jamming, writing and hanging out together – exploring the creative aspect of being Soundgarden. It feels great. We have some cool new songs that we are going to record very soon. Thank you for all of the support!”
The news comes six months after Soundgarden played a memorable headline set at US festival Lollapalooza, their first performance in 13 years. Aside from the unreleased track Black Rain emerging around the same time, since then there has has been an eerie quiet cast over the band’s goings on
Soundgarden, of course, released five albums between 1988 and 1996, and along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam became figureheads of the plaid-and-denim-shorts-wearing grunge movement of the early 90s.
