Spit Syndicate Think It’s Time For A Serious Conversation About Australia’s Drinking Culture

Aussie hip hop duo Spit Syndicate have taken to Facebook with an articulate and impassioned plea, saying they think it’s time Australia had “a serious conversation about our drinking culture”.

Acknowledging that “much has been written about the current lock-out situation” in their hometown of Sydney, MCs Nick Lupi and Jimmy Nice say they don’t want to add to “the surplus of lock-out thinkpieces”. Instead they feel “we’re long overdue” to have a conversation about how we drink as well as “our skewed concepts of masculinity entwined with aggression and violence”.

“We have a problem. It’s a problem which manifests itself in domestic violence, coward punches, the widening gap between how men and women are treated, paid and valued,” they write.

Addressing the lockout laws themselves, they labelled the laws as “moral panic whipped up by conservatives with the help of the Murdoch press, seized upon by gambling magnates and property developers set to make a killing.”

However as much as it pains them to see “our city’s nightlife take such a brutal beating” they believe there are still many other issues we ought to be fighting for just as hard.

“Indigenous disadvantage and the failure of governments/mainstream society to give enough of a fuck to try and fix it, our truly abhorrent treatment of asylum seekers (not to mention our poorer neighbours, such as East Timor), the far right dinosaurs who stymie any attempt to bring Australia’s social policies out of the dark ages, to name a few.”

Closing with the obligatory dig at Barry O’Farrell and his “bottle of vino” the boys also add that despite their disapproval of “skewed concepts of masculinity & aggression” they don’t think there’s any harm in giving “the finger to gronks”.
