Splendour In The Grass To Phase Out Plastic Water Bottles & Straws, Beginning In 2018

Splendour In The Grass has announced plans to phase out single use plastic water bottles and straws as part of its commitment to the Plastic Free July campaign.

The annual Byron Bay festival has pledged to remove all single use plastic water bottles over the next three years, and has banned the use of plastic straws in all bars and stalls at this year’s event, which begins later this week.

Splendour has also lifted its ban on stainless steel water bottles for 2018, and is encouraging festival-goers to bring their own reusable water bottles to fill up at the festival site.

Run by Green Music Australia (GMA), the Plastic Free July campaign is working towards removing single use plastics from music events.

“Green initiatives have long been a part of Splendour in the Grass so we’re thrilled to work with Green Music Australia on this ongoing plan to remove single use plastics from our event,” says Splendour In The Grass General Manager, Elise Huntley.

GMA will also host a beach clean up with a number of Splendour artists and supporters during this year’s festival, with the help of local marine conservation organisation Positive Change for Marine Life. Details of the clean up are still to be announced.

“If we’re going to get polluting plastics out of the music scene – and we all know we have to – big youth festivals have to step up and take leadership,” says GMA Executive Director Tim Hollo.

“It’s fantastic to see Splendour taking these important steps down that road, and we look forward to continuing to work with them as we make a plastic free music scene a reality.”

Splendour In The Grass will return to North Byron Parklands this weekend, with headline sets from Lorde, Vampire Weekend and Kendrick Lamar.
