Spoiler Alert: Proof Foo Fighters’ Australian Tour Is Going To Smash

Foo Fighters kicked off the first show of their Sonic Highways Australian/New Zealand tour in Christchurch last night, ahead of the Aussie lap which kicks off next week.

For those mondo-zealous fans who are busting a nut to find out what they’re in for when the Foos come back to town, here’s a rough idea of what their concert could look like, based on the experience of our pals across the detch.

The Fooies concert at AMI Stadium on the country’s South Island was a two-and-a-half hour affair, according to stuff.co.nz, that traversed 22 songs, 10 albums and two stages. The first half of the set kicked off with the Foos surging onto the stage with their Sonic Highways hit, Something From Nothing, before churning through some of the mightiest songs in their catalogue — The Pretender, Learn to Fly, My Hero and an extended version of Monkey Wrench all got an airing.

Setlist A wrapped up with frontman Dave Grohl breaking out the acoustic and shuffling to Stage B in the centre of the stadium to perform serenade-style acoustic versions of Skin and Bones and Wheels.

There were even more surprises when team Foo returned to the spotlight for the second half of the set, breaking out a cluster of classic rock covers, from the David Bowie/Queen singalong Pressure, to KISS’s Detroit Rock City, The Faces’ Stay With Me and, most awesome of all, the AC/DC anthem Let There Be Rock.

“When we were kids, we played these songs in a garage,” Grohl told the crowd. “These songs made us wanna play rock ‘n’ roll.”

Foo Fighters rounded out the night with a trio of their most beloved hits, All My Life, These Days and (what else?) Everlong.

Foo Fighters’ Australian tour gets underway next Tuesday, February 24th in Brisbane. Check out the full setlist from their Christchurch show, below.
