Punters at Stereosonic Sydney and their families and friends were freaking out yesterday after a semi-legitimate Facebook page claimed that a shooting had taken place at the event.
The page – Police in the Area – posted a picture of a pistol being held by a hand in a white glove, which was sent out to the page’s 76,000+ followers.
A caption accompanying the picture read:
“NSW
Someone has been shot at stereosonic cops everywhere at plympic park parramatta road”
Twitter was also abuzz with news about the apparent shooting – you can see a few tweets on the topic at the bottom of the page.
However, it appears that the incident was a complete hoax. Several Facebook users commented on the picture once it was posted, saying they knew nothing about a shooting taking place. They also slammed the page’s operators for posting such a status.
Stacey Mallouhi wrote: “No one I know who was there heard anything about a shooting. Putting up a post about a shooting without confirmation of it isn’t nice. My niece was there and my Aunty was freaking out.”
Lisa Rigby wrote: “who eva did this stinks my son was there.”
NSW Police haven’t reported on the alleged incident at Olympic Park last night and according to the Stereosonic promoters, “an absolutely amazing day” was had by all.
The flurry of chatter about a supposed shooting at Stereosonic came less than 24 hours after a man was shot dead by police at the Redfern Mall after stealing a truck and threatening to run over bystanders.
