Late last year, Stone Sour confirmed they had begun work on a new covers project that was tentatively set for an early 2015 release. That day is almost upon us as now it has been revealed the limited edition covers EP, Meanwhile In Burbank…, will be unveiled especially for Record Store Day 2015. To celebrate the band have shared one of its cuts, a ripping cover of Metallica’s Creeping Death.
Meanwhile In Burbank… features five tracks, each one a cover of a song by an iconic metal act. “The idea was not to shy away from a song because it was popular or pick a band that most people might not have heard,” explains Josh Rand in a statement, “but to pick ones that truly meant something to one of us at some point in our life.”
The idea for the EP came during the band’s 2014 North American tour, when they played a different cover song every night.
Songs featured on the Meanwhile In Burbank… EP are covers of Alice In Chains’ We Die Young, Judas Priests’ Heading Out To The Highway, KISS’ Love Gun, Black Sabbath’s Children Of The Grave and a cut from Metallica’s 1984 album Ride the Lightning, Creeping Death.
“We wanted to show our respect for our influences with these covers and it wouldn’t be complete without Metallica,” Corey Taylor told Rolling Stone about the project. “Creeping Death is an absolute crusher! I hope we did it justice.” You guys can decide for yourselves by streaming the cover below.
Meanwhile In Burbank… will be released in the US and UK at select stores on Record Store Day this April 18th, and will be limited to 3000 copies. No word yet if they ever plan on giving the EP and Australian release.
