Coming hot on the heels of its eclectic lineup announcement, Melbourne’s Sugar Mountain festival has unveiled the artists who will curate their revolutionary Sensory Restaurant in January, headlined by the blokes behind the Stranger Things soundtrack.
S U R V I V E, the team behind the ’80s nostalgia soundtrack for the Netflix smash hit, are collaborating with multimedia artist Daniel Arsham and IDES chef Peter Gunn to create a truly immersive restaurant experience.
The soundtrack to the restaurant will be created by S U R V I V E. A group of four Texans — Adam Jones, Kyle Dixon, Mark Donica and Michael Stein — they shot to stardom this year as Dixon and Stein’s original music for Stranger Things became a talking point the world over. Their brand of brooding, pulsating electronica will soundtrack Sensory with a fully original, hour-long score.
The 2016 edition of Sugar Mountain saw the debut of Sensory to rave reviews — Cut Copy worked with artists Tin & Ed and Bomba chef Jesse Garner — and next year’s go-around is sure to be as exciting.
The visual aspect of 2017’s restaurant will be handled by New York artist Daniel Arsham, though it’s hard to define his art in just a few words. Renowned for his ability to bring together art, architecture and performance, he will transform the restaurant’s physical environment, and he brings significant experience, having previously worked on Dior Homme retail spaces with Hedi Slimane and recreating Pharrell Williams keyboards out of volcanic ash.
If all that doesn’t distract you from eating, then acclaimed Collingwood restaurant IDES will provide the taste satisfaction. The man behind it, Peter Gunn, is taking charge of Sensory’s menu, which will feature several courses.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Daniel Arsham and the guys from S U R V I V E to take this idea to a whole new level,” Gunn says. “When I opened IDES I put as much thought into the music, the interiors and the lighting as I did the food, those different aspects are vital in creating a great dining experience.”
Exclusive seatings take place on the day, and so tickets to Sensory Restaurant are extremely limited. They cost $70, inclusive of food and drink, and go on sale 8am Wednesday 16 November at this link. You can bundle it with a Sugar Mountain festival ticket too, or just go to the restaurant.
Sugar Mountain has also announced the food and drink vendors that will be keeping punters happy on the day. Kong BBQ, Mr. Miyagi and 8bit lead the way, with Lazer Pig, Pretty Mama and Pidapipo also providing a point of difference. The Top will sling their finest cocktails, Sample Brew are pouring the beers and Industry Beans will keep you buzzed with their unique and healthy coffee.
