American record producer and Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight is facing 28 years in prison after pleading no contest to the charge of voluntary manslaughter over the hit-and-run death of Heavyweight Records co-founder Terry Carter in 2015.
53-year-old Knight is due to be formally sentenced in October, and in exchange for his plea, prosecutors are calling for a sentence of 28 years in prison, CNN reports. Two other criminal cases against him will reportedly be dismissed at sentencing.
Knight had been facing life in prison over the hit-and-run incident, which took place after a confrontation on the set of N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton.
He was accused in January 2015 of having run over two men, resulting in the death of Terry Carter, and faced one count of murder as well as one count of attempted murder in the case of Cle ‘Bone’ Sloan, who was the second man hit by Knight’s truck.
Knight had also been charged with one count of hit-and-run.
Graphic video of the incident emerged in March 2015, and Knight was later accused of threatening to kill Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray over his portrayal in the film.
The defence had previously argued that Knight was defending himself, because Sloan had a gun.
Knight will be formally sentenced on 4th October.
