Another live music venue has bit the dust with Sydney’s Gaelic Hotel announcing they will no longer host live music beyond this month.
The Surry Hills venue has been a staple of Sydney’s live music scene for several years and only recently underwent renovations to become a multi-purpose venue with capacity for 500 punters.
Venue management released the following statement this afternoon, which was published on Fasterlouder.com.au.
It is with heavy hearts as of 1st April 2012, The Gaelic will no longer be hosting live music.
The decision was a difficult one, made after a number of years in a tough climate for live music in Sydney venues. It joins the closure of other much-beloved venues for Sydney music lovers, including The Hopetoun in recent years.
We would like to thank all the bands, promoters, bookers and punters that have supported us over many years.
There have been so many memorable shows in The Gaelic’s time – from The Drop Kick Murphies, The Strokes, Silverchair, The Presets and Helmet to The Used, Ben Kweller, Bookshade and Henry Rollins.
Venue manager Narissa Mathews said she was sad to be axing live music from the venue – but stated that The Gaelic Hotel will continue to trade as a bar and restaurant.
“The good news is, we still have one more month of great gigs lined up – so stop by for a pint to say goodbye, or better yet come and see one of the great gigs we’re hosting, including The Freak and the Show Girl, Urge Overkill, DJ Quik, Spacetribe, The Art and Oscar Mulero.”
