Beloved Sydney watering hole The Abercrombie Hotel, located on Abercrombie Street in Chippendale, which in the past has served as home to Purple Sneakers‘ famous club nights and more recently as the longtime host of Sunday party S.A.S.H, will close in January 2014.
As inthemix reports, the closing of the esteemed venue comes as a result of the continued gentrification of the old Carlton United Brewery site, with grand commercial and residential developments consistently threatening the existence of establishments like The Abercrombie.
“We’re shutting down due to the development going ahead around Central Park,” the venue’s manager reportedly explained in an interview with Pulse Radio, adding, “They’re going to be building a big commercial shopping mall around and above us.”
News of The Abercrombie’s closure comes six months after the closure of the venue’s spiritual cousin, The Clare Hotel. The famous art deco venue officially shut its doors for good with a rowdy ‘Last Night’ party, which, as inthemix reports, saw punters dismantle the establishment.
On their official Facebook page, party crew S.A.S.H assured fans that “Abercrombie may soon be gone, but S.A.S.H will never die,” adding, “keep your eyes & ears peeled as we’ll be announcing S.A.S.H’s new home very soon!” The final party will take place on Sunday, 5th January 2014.
