Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers Team Up with triple j’s Concetta Caristo on ‘The Song I Wrote When I Was 11’

Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers have brought the childhood vision of triple j breakfast presenter Concetta Caristo to life with ‘The Song I Wrote When I Was 11’. The band were enlisted to make the song a reality after Caristo revealed the story behind writing the lyrics as a child on Bryce & Concetta, which she co-hosts with presenter Bryce Mills.

A young Caristo wrote the song after hearing the phrase “one-night stand” while watching TV. Despite not knowing its connotations, she decided to write a song about one. “11-year-old Concetta grew up in a perfect storm to create this song,” said Caristo in a press statement.

“[She had] strict Italian parents who warned her about boys, hours of watching unrealistic 90s rom-com movies, plus being a girl with an abundance of feelings and a flair for the dramatic. Current-day Concetta is so excited to share this teen anthem with the world!”

The song’s music video stars Mills in the lead role, and also features a cameo from recent J Award winner G Flip and fellow triple j presenters such as Lucy Smith and Ash McGregor. It was shot around the ABC Studios in Ultimo, and also features Concetta performing the song in the studio where Like a Version is filmed alongside the rest of Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers.

Mills praised the work of Teen Jesus in writing the music and helping to produce the song in a press statement, calling them “the perfect band to make this song come to life”. “They absolutely nailed it and if you can’t get the song out of your head, blame them,” he said.

Caristo, too, expressed her gratitude to the band – whose members she described as “actual rockstars”. “I seriously can’t get over [them seeing] something in this silly little project to actually get on board and bring it to life,” she said.

Caristo – a stand-up comedian and co-host of the podcast Big Natural Talents – joined the triple j breakfast team in December 2022, replacing Ebony Boadu as Mills’ co-host. She has appeared on Australian television throughout the year, including appearances on Would I Lie to You? and The Cheap Seats. Earlier this week, it was announced that Caristo would co-host the ABC’s New Years Eve broadcast alongside former triple j presenters Zan Rowe and Charlie Pickering. She will also appear on the second season of Taskmaster Australia in 2024.

Teen Jesus, meanwhile, released their debut studio album I Love You in September. They completed a national headlining tour in support of it last month, and are fresh from supporting Foo Fighters at AAMI Park in Melbourne earlier this week as part of their Australian stadium tour.
