Patrick Carney of The Black Keys fame has proven himself the bigger man in an ongoing — and well documented — feud between the indie rock gods and nemesis Jack White. Carney recently came to White’s defence whilst slamming TMZ for leaking an email that triggered the bad blood.
In the leaked email the White Stripes singer, who is adamant that Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach ripped him off stylistically, asks his former wife to remove their children from the same school attended by Auerbach’s kids, while being open about his disdain for the Black Keys singer.
“I actually feel embarrassed for [White]. I don’t hold grudges, man. I really don’t. We’ve all said fucked-up shit in private, and divorce is hard,” Carney told Rolling Stone. “I really think personal things are personal things. Like, TMZ? Honestly, they should be fucking ashamed of themselves, that they make a living dragging poor souls that have nothing, that aren’t famous, into this world.”
“Everybody should be scrutinised?” the drummer continues. “I don’t believe that. I think that if you come off with a strong platform or moral agenda, then, yeah, maybe you should be scrutinised if there’s a conflict there. Like, if you’re a TV evangelist who’s doing something awful.”
“No one’s doing anything illegal, it’s just that people are living lives that get complicated,” he added. While Carney insists that White “sounds like an asshole” in the leaked email, he says he would have preferred not knowing what White and his former partner talk about behind closed doors.
“Those e-mails that Jack White wrote that got leaked, as fucked up as that shit is, that was a private conversation, and it doesn’t register to me. You know how horrifying it would be if all of our private shit was aired? And people go sniffing around looking for this shit. And ultimately it’s no one’s business.”
