The Black Keys and their producer Danger Mouse have lodged initial proceedings to sue Pizza Hut and US hardware store Home Depot for using their music in company ads without permission.
NME and Spin report that the duo – drummer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney – claim both companies and their advertising agencies used “significant portions” of two singles from their latest album El Camino in new TV ads.
Pizza Hut used Gold on the Ceiling in an ad for their ‘Cheesy Bites Pizza’, whilst Home Depot used Lonely Boy in an advert for power tools.
Apparently, The Black Keys sent letters to both companies last month, asking them to stop showing the commercials. The band’s lawyers have described the unauthorised use of the songs as “a brazen and improper effort to capitalise on [the] plaintiffs’ hard-earned success”.
