UK indie-rock outfit The Charlatans have just announced a national tour of Australia in March next year, in support of their twelfth album Modern Nature.
Produced by the band themselves and Jim Spencer and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Portishead), Modern Nature features a cavalcade of guests from their three temporary drummers – Pete Salisbury of The Verve, Stephen Morris of New Order and Gabriel Gurnsey of DFA’s avant-discogroup Factory Floor – to Kate Bush’s backing singers Melanie Marshall and Sandra Marvin, strings by Sean O’ Hagan and brass courtesy of Dexys Midnight Runners’ Big Jim Paterson.
The album was recorded in the band’s own “Big Mushroom” studio in the depths of the northern hemisphere winter in January 2014. The band “were aching for the summer when we wrote it,” recalls vocalist Tim Burgess. “It was freezing and we were trying to write songs that made us happy”.
The first album the band have recorded since the passing of their drummer Jon Brookes from brain cancer in 2013, Modern Nature sees the band coming together and healing. Described by critics as one of the band’s best releases of their career, the upcoming tour promises to offer something for hardcore fans and newcomers alike.
This will be their first tour down under since last visiting in 2010. In the meantime you can check out the video for So Oh here, with full tour details below.
