UK indie trio The Cribs probably looked up to Nirvana at some point in their career – and now they’re taking a modern-day swipe (of sorts) at them.
Frontman Ryan Jarman has told The Sun that he believes the iconic grunge trio – Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novaselic – wouldn’t get a record deal given the trends in today’s music industry and the time-conscious climate.
“Bands like Nirvana and Sonic Youth – that come up from the underground and cross over – the problem is there’s no time to do that now,” he said.
“Even underground bands, if people like them, get over-exposed really quickly. Then people move on to the next thing. It’s a concern that bands can’t come up through those channels any more.”
Nirvana unofficially reformed with Sir Paul McCartney on vocals as part of the 12.12.12 Benefit Concert earlier this month. Grohl, Novaselic and Pat Smear joined McCartney to perform their song for Grohl’s Sound City movie soundtrack, Cut Me Some Slack.
The Cribs are currently in the country to play the Pyramid Rock Festival in Philip Island tonight. They’ll also be doing sideshows in Sydney on Wednesday and in Brisbane on Friday. Check out all the details for those shows here.
