The Doors Members Honour Jim Morrison on 40th Anniversary of His Death

The Doors front man Jim Morrison has been honoured by two of his former band mates, Ray Manzarek (Keyboards) and Robby Krieger (Guitar) on the 40th anniversary of his death. The two visited his grave in Pere Lachaise cemetery, Paris, where they lit candles in his memory while fans wearing t-shirts bearing the words ’40th Anniversary’ laid flowers. The singer died in the French capital in 1971 from a suspected drug overdose.

Originally the grave had no official marker until French officials placed a shield over it. It was stolen in 1973. On the 10th anniversary of his death, a Croatian sculptor named Mladen Mikulin placed a bust of Morrison with a new gravestone. That was stolen in 1988. In the 90s Morrison’s father laid a flat stone with an inscription in Greek, translated as ‘according to his own daemon’. The grave has been a pilgrimage site for his fans since his death.

It was recently revealed that The Doors wanted Paul Rodgers (Free and Bad Company) to replace Jim Morrison. Rodgers now has previous form replacing dead singers, what with him taking on vocal duties for Queen in recent years, replacing Freddie Mercury.
