The Hold Steady Announce 2024 Melbourne Weekender Shows

Having first brought their ‘Weekender’ tour concept to Melbourne in 2022, veteran Brooklyn indie favourites The Hold Steady will return for another round in 2024 to celebrate their 20th (+1) anniversary. The band will play three shows in Melbourne in May next year: Friday, 24th and Saturday, 25th May at the Croxton, along with a more intimate show at Stay Gold on Sunday, 26th May.

The Weekender has been a feature of The Hold Steady for many years now, born out of a desire to play shows, but not tour in the exhausting, city-hopping way that the band had done for most of its career. Instead of racing through a number of cities around the country, the band will pick one and settle in for a few nights.

The Hold Steady: ‘Grand Junction’

The Hold Steady broke out in the mid-2000s with acclaimed records like Separation Sunday (2005) and Boys and Girls in America (2006). The band haven’t slowed down in recent years, with Open Door Policy arriving in 2021 and their latest album The Price of Progress dropping earlier this year.

“That word [cinematic] has really been our goal, certainly my goal, in the past few years,” frontman and songwriter Craig Finn told Tidal earlier this year. “That’s part of the transaction of making a ninth record. You start working on something and go, ‘We did that already on the fourth record. I want to use these instruments, to tell these stories, in ways that feel grand and exciting.”
