The numbers have been crunched and the results are in — here are the tunes Australia couldn’t get enough of in 2018.
The conquering artists and tunes look pretty similar across Apple Music and Spotify, with Drake’s ‘God’s Plan’, 5 Seconds Of Summer’s ‘Youngblood’ and Post Malone’s ‘I Fall Apart’ featuring in the top 5 most-spun tracks across both platforms.
Drake took out the top honours on Spotify and ranked at #3 on its fruity competitor, while Postie nabbed #1 on Apple and slotted in at number #5 on Spotify. He also took out the #3 and #4 slots on Spotify as well with ‘Psycho (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)’ and ‘Better Now’ respectively.
Meanwhile, 5SOS’s ‘Youngblood’ was the 2nd most streamed song across both platforms, but the band interestingly didn’t feature in Spotify’s list of top 5 most-streamed artists, with those honours going to Drake, Post Malone, Khalid, deceased rapper XXXTENTACION and Ed Sheeran.
Sheeran also took out Apple Music’s rankings of the most streamed albums of 2018 with ÷ (Deluxe), with Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys and The Greatest Showman soundtrack bringing up the rear.
When it came to Aussie music, 5SOS’s ‘Youngblood’ was obviously the most-streamed tune, but Spotify users were also loving Dean Lewis’s ‘Be Alright’, PNAU’s ‘Go Bang’, Angus & Julia Stone’s ‘Chateau’ and Peking Duk’s ‘Fire’.
Interestingly, after a year marred by controversy, Sydney’s Sticky Fingers were the fourth most streamed Aussie artist on Spotify, behind the likes of 5SOS, Vance Joy and Sia.
