Brooklyn dance-punks The Rapture have reportedly split up and, as if the band thought no-one would notice, they’ve tried to keep the news on the DL.
Consequence Of Sound are reporting that a press release issued by the Red Bull Music Academy’s latest New York takeover described The Rapture frontman Luke Jenner as “formerly of The Rapture”, on the lineup for a William Onyeabor tribute concert.
Jonathan Galkin, manager of the group’s on-and-off label DFA Records, has now told self-titled that he kept thinking that the split “might blow over”.
“But that might not be the case,” Galkin said, before proposing that the magazine should “feel free to go to press with this headline: ‘Did the Rapture Break Up and Not Tell Anyone?’”
Around the release of his band’s last record, 2011′s In the Grace of Your Love, Luke Jenner told Pitchfork that he was “afraid of losing the band”, and afraid for so long that he forgot to take care of himself.
“I was really confused,” he said at the time. “I’m not sure why I quit the band… The fact that I quit something that’s so precious to me was an indication that there was a lot of stuff I didn’t want to deal with but had to face.”
The band’s decision to go their separate ways isn’t a complete surprise. The group have been inactive aside from DJ gigs in the past year, with bassist/singer Matt Safer quitting in 2009 and Jenner leaving briefly to deal with his mother’s death and the birth of his son.
