The Rolling Stones continue to jostle with Daft Punk for the media coverage mantle, this time with frontman Mick Jagger making headlines by stating that the Stones won’t be playing any new tracks during their upcoming tour this year, as the band’s fans simply aren’t interested in their new material.
Jagger made this very candid admission to USA Today after he was quizzed as to whether the Stones would make a follow-up to 2005’s A Bigger Bang. “It would be nice to have a new album,” he said, “But people don’t like the new album when you play it onstage. They glumly look at you. ‘OK, it will be over in a minute’. It’s not a good excuse, but it’s the truth and has to be said.”
True to form, fellow glimmer twin Keith Richards subtly contradicted Jagger’s sentiment with his own comments:
“The time to record a band is once they’ve been on the road a while so they’re hot. We’ll think about that while we’re doing this. The world needs more Stones records. So do I.”
1 point the 2 could agree on, however, was that the fans won’t simply be fed best-of sets with a few obscurities creeping into the mould.
