Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich have led the charge, calling for fans to sign a petition which calls for a second referendum to vote on whether the UK should stay or leave the European Union.
Over the weekend, 51.9% of the UK voted to leave the European Union, however, this petition is urging the government to implement a rule that implies another referendum must be called if the remain or leave vote is less than 60% based a turnout less than 75%.
The UK parliament must consider petitions for debate that get more than 100,000 signatures and currently it has reached 3.5 million, powered along by the support of some high-profile musicians.
Yorke, who rarely tweets, shared the link to the petition as did Godrich. Brian May of Queen has also jumped on board asking followers to sign it as has the host of The Late Late Show, James Corden.
In addition, British composer Max Ritcher, Grace Kelly hitmaker Mika and grime star Novelist have signed in the hope that they will be able to turn around the decision which will eventually force the UK to leave the EU.
Unsurprisingly, Brexit was a huge talking point at Glastonbury over the weekend. Matt Healy of The 1975 told their crowd, “older people who have voted in a future that we don’t f**king want,” while Damon Albarn said, “Democracy has failed us.”
Foals’ frontman Yannis Philippakis took to the stage wearing a t-shirt with a slogan saying, “Abuse of power comes of no surprise”.
It’s unknown yet whether this petition will change anything but it’s being treated as a last ditch attempt to reverse a decision that many are unhappy with.
