Thundamentals, Muscles And DZ Deathrays Put Their Spin On ‘Summer Heights High’ Songs

Three of Australia’s coolest acts have lent their talents to breathe new life into tracks from one of the coolest TV shows to hit our screens in recent years.

Triple j favourites Thundamentals, Muscles and DZ Deathrays have done new versions of various tracks that were made famous in Chris Lilley’s hit 2007 mocumentary series Summer Heights High.

The songs have been recorded for a new ‘Collector’s Edition’ of the Summer Heights High soundtrack, which has been released by the ABC in time for Christmas.

The most recognisable track punters will remember is Naughty Girl – which Lilley released under the character of Mr G in 2008. DZ Deathrays have taken the track and put their trademark thrashy sludge sound on top of it – whilst maintaining the key hallmarks of the song and its throbbing lyrics (Ecstacy, anyone?).

The other two tracks are somewhat new creations. Thundamentals have taken the lofty choir sounds of the theme song to Summer Heights High, and mashed them up with excerpts of the most imfamous phrases from Tongan schoolboy character Jonah Takalua. Appropriately titled Thunda Heights High – they’ve also mixed a fresh set of lyrics into the track that focus on the show.

Finally, Muscles has come to the fore and taken quotes from private school exchange student Ja’mie King – and put them all over a series of beats and samples. The track goes by the name of Public School Bitchez.
