The 2020 Grammy Awards took place yesterday, and there were a ton of big winners – mainly Billie Eilish. But one welcome win was Tool, who took home the award for ‘Best Metal Performance’ for their track ‘7empest’.
It has been 14 long years since the metal legends and enigmas have won a GRAMMY, which means it’s been roughly the same amount of time between albums, and drummer Danny Carey said the win restored his “faith in humankind”.
“Wow, kind of renews my faith in humankind, to know there’s long attention spans left out there that can listen to a 12-minute song,” Carey said upon accepting his award. ‘7empest’ now holds the record for longest song to win a ‘Best Metal Performance’ Grammy, actually coming in at just under 16 minutes in length on the album Fear Inoculum.
For the award, they beat out heavyweights like Killswitch Engage, I Prevail and Death Angel.
