The hip-hop world lost a legend earlier this year with the death of A Tribe Called Quest MC Phife Dawg at the age of just 45.
But while his legacy will undoubtedly live on through the incredible music that he brought us all in life, it seems a new chapter is still to be written.
In a new interview on the Rap Radar podcast (via Consequence Of Sound), Epic Records mogul L.A. Reid has revealed that the Five Foot Assassin managed to reunite with his old A Tribe Called Quest bandmates and record a brand new album, prior to his passing away from diabetes-related complications in March of 2016.
“[It is] a brand new album that they recorded before Phife passed away,” Reid explained. “I’m really happy about it man, it’s really something special. It’s one of the things I’m most excited about over everything we’re working on.”
The sessions involved Phife, Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and even fourth man Jarobi White, and – if/when released – will mark A Tribe Called Quest’s first album in almost two decades (since 1998’s The Love Movement).
At this point, there’s been no official announcement or details from the group themselves, but we’ll keep you posted with any updates as they develop.
Meanwhile, the potential new ATCQ LP won’t be the only Phife Dawg recording to get a posthumous release.
A video for the MC’s solo single Nutshell was unveiled just weeks after his death.
