TV On The Radio have remained relatively quiet since the tragic passing of bassist/producer Gerard Smith in April 2011. Now at last, some two years after silence shrouded the Brooklyn indie-rocker’s camp, new music and live appearances are on the horizon.
In an interview with SPIN, singer Tunde Adebimpe offered a timely update on the band’s creative process revealing that despite not having any concrete plans for an LP, they are back in the studio.
“We’re sort of collecting material for a record, but right now we’re only thinking in terms of songs, smaller things we can put out regularly until an album seems possible… It’s not that you’re less precious about the process, but I like coming in and saying, “Let’s make a couple songs,” not feeling any sort of pressure to lock ourselves in a room.”
The new process may come as a result of the band’s recent parting with Interscope and subsequent shift to band member Dave Sitek’s record label, Federal Prism. When Adebimpe is quizzed in regards to the band’s relationship with Interscope he simply replies “Um, yeah they did what they did. [Laughs] That’s as diplomatic as I can put that,” suggesting plenty of tension still lies with the band and their former label.
Federal Prism recently detailed a long list of releases for 2013 including two albums by Kelis, a single and album from Sitek’s solo project Maximum Balloon (featuring a collaboration with Miguel), and releases from CSS and Freddie Gibbs amongst others.
Australian fans of TV On The Radio were given reason to rejoice just yesterday when the four piece were announced as part of the Splendour In The Grass 2013 lineup.
