ICYMI triple j‘s Hottest 100 Of The Decade countdown happened this weekend and – spoiler alert – our own Tame Impala came in at #1 with their 2015 smash, ‘The Less I Know The Better’.
And after hearing the news that Australia had voted the Currents A-side as the greatest song of the 2010’s, frontman Kevin Parker was beyond cheering.
“It’s something I always dreamt about, ever since I started listening to [the Hottest 100] you know,” Tame’s main-man told the j’s.
“I can’t describe how much of a big thing that is to me. More than anything else that other people talk about being a huge deal. You know, like headlining festivals or Grammys or whatever. Like the Hottest 100 is the closest thing to my heart of all that kind of stuff. So that’s unbelievable.”
Tame actually scored four songs in the countdown, with ‘Let It Happen’ coming in at #26, ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ at #65 and ‘Elephant’ at #66.
They’ve charted in the Hottest 100 11 times before, but this actually marks their first time ever hitting the #1 spot, thanks to the dreamy heartbreak psych-pop ballad that spawned a million memes about that asshole, Trevor.
“The Trevors! Actually… that’s a good point. If your name’s Trevor and you voted for it, thanks for being a good sport, buddy!” Kev told the j’s.
The top 10 was rounded out by Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know (Feat. Kimbra)’ at #2, Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ at #3, Violent Soho’s ‘Covered In Chrome’ at #4, followed by RÜFÜS DU SOL’s ‘Innerbloom’, Gang of Youths’ ‘Magnolia’, Foster The People’s ‘Pumped Up Kicks’, Flume’s ‘Never Be Like You (Feat. Kai)’, Angus & Julia Stone’s ‘Big Jet Plane’ and Matt Corby’s ‘Brother’.
In total, nine songs got a guernsey that have never charted in a Hottest 100 before, including Adele’s ‘Rolling In the Deep’, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘m.A.A.d City’, Rex Orange County’s ‘Loving Is Easy’, J. Cole’s ‘No Role Modelz’, Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own’, Azealia Banks’ ‘212’, Avicii’s ‘Levels’, Sticky Fingers’ ‘Rum Rage’ and RÜFÜS DU SOL’s ‘Innerbloom’.
Interestingly, industry-“cancelled” band Sticky Fingers charted 3 times with ‘Australia Street’ also coming in at #15 and Gold Snafu at #58.
