Underbelly Arts Festival Comes To Cockatoo Island, This Saturday

Underbelly Arts Festival takes over the jewel of Sydney Harbour, Cockatoo Island, this Saturday. In fact they’ve been there for about a fortnight already. In a bold display of transparency, they opened the set up process to the public, with a unique offering they called ‘The Lab’. You could watch as these artisans create magic out of the disused industrial spaces. If you missed it, don’t feel bad, we did too. It’s our loss. But all can be redeemed this Saturday, by catching a ferry from Circular Quay or Balmain over the water to the Island.

There’s all sorts of goodies on offer – Theatre, Musicians, Installations, Dance, and stuff that defies definition. It’s a feast for all the senses. I could tell you more but it’d be easier if you clicked across to http://underbellyarts.com.au/2011/artists/ for the full low down.

Of course there’s beer too, happily provided by the good people at Little Creatures, and a cafe serving delicious food throughout the day. If you’ve been to the Bienalle you’ll know how perfect the Island is for Artistic installations, and like us, you’ll be rejoicing that more people are taking it up, especially local up and comers like Rinse Out Inc, the team behind Underbelly. “An exciting, young, not for profit arts organisation dedicated to supporting the next generation of artists in Australia.”, they’ve been doing more than their bit for the scene since 2007.

Honestly, this is the sort of thing that makes life worth while. Is there a cute boy or girl you’ve fancied for a while? Ask them to come to this. Stroll around the shoreline lapping up the sunshine, and enjoy the creative gifts of Australia’s best artists. It’s a guaranteed winner.
