A custom-built VOX guitar played by Beatles members John Lennon and George Harrison has been estimated to fetch between US$200,000-$300,000 when it goes up for sale at the Music Icons auction in New York on 18th May.
As reported by Reuters, Lennon wielded the axe during a video session for track Hello, Goodbye, while Harrison practiced I Am The Walrus on the guitar. Both tracks appear on the 1967 LP/Double EP Magical Mystery Tour.
The guitar was then given to Apple Records electronics engineer Yanni “Magic Alex” Mardas in 1967. Martin Nolan, executive director for Julien’s Auctions, the auction house responsible for Music Icons, described the guitar as “one of the most historical pieces of music memorabilia” ever to be on offer from the company.
Other Beatles memorabilia up for auction include In His Own Write, Lennon’s 1964 story book, signed by the band and expected to go for around US$30,000. Also up for auction is a copy of their 1963 debut album Please Please Me, again signed by all four members and estimated to be sold for anywhere in-between $30,000 to $50,000.
Music Icons in New York will also have items from Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Elvis Presley and the Grateful Dead.
